Veteran’s Day!

November 11, 1919…

The day of the first Veterans Day, or known then as “Armistice Day,” as proclaimed by Woodrow Wilson, following the end of World War I. 

 “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

 

It would go on to have the date and reasoning amended by a few more presidents and congress, but alas, Gerald Ford signed it back into Public Law, to be observed on November 11th each year, beginning in 1978. 

To this day, Veterans day remains a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
