Episode 1 Mythbusters: SAFE Solutions Style

Today’s myth: Anyone can start a professional security installation business, it’s as simple as just throwing up a few cameras. What makes a security company able to legally operate in Texas?

 

In today’s society, there is no such thing as being too careful with your personal information. The stories of broken trust and privacy are a never ending list. So when it comes to the idea of having your home monitored, we understand how there could be hesitation in that! There should always be these types of questions:

*Who are the people installing my system?

*Who sees what my cameras record? 

*What happens with the information I use with my system? 

*Who are the people monitoring my home and how much can they see? 

 

We want you to know, we are glad you ask these questions! They are important to ask with any system you are considering installing in your home! Self or professionally monitored! If the point of your security system is to feel more secure in your home, then TRANSPARENCY is what any security company owes you!

 

So with that said, we want to do a series for “Mythbusting” common misconceptions of security systems. As the series goes, we will cover a few of those questions or misconceptions that we hear most often! 

 

Leading off this series, are today’s questions:

1. What certification(s) and requirements are required of someone installing a system in a home or business?
2. Can anyone operate a security business?

 

To have a professional security installation business there are a few requirements the state of Texas has in place for your safety:

• First of all, the company is required to hold a Certificate of Licensure from the Private Security Board of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Any professional security installation company should have their license number displayed on their vehicles with advertising, on the website, any physical marketing materials and any displayed signage. Texas requires any company that installs burglar alarms, CCTV or electronic access control to be licensed.

     

• The management of the company should be able to show proof of passing the state exam for operating a security system business.
• They should have their regulation certificate complete with information to file complaints.

• They should be operating with general liability insurance. (This one is a big one to ask for! Protect your property!)
• Any technicians and operators that represent the company are required to submit and pass a clean background check complete with fingerprinting.
• They must also pass Certified Technician Courses. They must pass not only a technical exam but an exam on the local codes to become certified.
• The education doesn’t just stop there, to continue operating in the field, they must complete continuing education courses to stay up to date on codes and laws. A technician for a security company must complete 8 hours a year, with 2 of them being for ethics. The manager of a security company must complete 16 hours a year, with 4 hours being for ethics. They should be able to provide documentation of their hours to show they have the latest training in the field.

 

So as you can see, the answer to the question is “no.” Not just anyone can run a security installation business. Texas has requirements in place to keep you feeling protected as you go through the process of shopping for the security company that is right for you. Starting by asking about these requirements, will help you in choosing the right company to install your system.
